overview
Over 3,000 children in Lixeira Kandimba near Lobito were “crying” for a school. Drought had been severe, food was scarce and yet they asked for schools, for education. RISE wanted to give these kids a chance, and hope for the future! Thanks to the incredible response of donors to the 2009 Spring Appeal, we reached our goal to fund a new 8 classroom school. The funds were wired and construction began. The children and community welcomed RISE’s July 2009 Team with overwhelming enthusiasm and gratitude. The school was completed and dedicated in February 2010. As Lixeira is on the edge of Lobito, there is access to power, so students attend classes in three shifts. The community is highly motivated and paid for a wall built around the perimeter of the school, as well as small trees to provide shade.
In May 2011, US Ambassador to Angola, Christopher McMullen, arrived at the RISE school at Lixeira, where about three thousand students, teachers and community members were waiting for him. The atmosphere was “euphoric” as the crowd was honored and delighted by the special visit. Ambassador McMullen talked with the principal, parent representatives, Ministry of Education officers and teachers to understand more about the educational conditions, and encouraged them in their efforts as well.
