overview
Comandante Dangereux is an 8-classroom school, built in the town of Nharea, in the Bie Province. Life is hard and the needs are huge. The first stone was laid June 27, 2018, and construction began in July.
The school was dedicated on January 31, 2019, as the day marked the official opening of the 2019 school year. The Bie Governor and Nharea Administrator were joined by many government and Ministry of Education officials, students, teachers, families, and community members for the ceremony. Dr. Mary Joy Pigozzi, Executive Director of Educate A Child, and Mr. Kevin Murphy, President of the ExxonMobil Foundation, traveled to Angola to join the local ExxonMobil team and RISE to share in the dedication of the school, as it is a result our co-funding partnership.
A huge crowd gathered despite the weather. The officials, guests, and RISE team members were on the porch of the school and protected, but the kids, teachers, and community stood in the downpour as the ceremony went on. The heavy rain did not dampen the joy and gratitude for their new school! Though unfortunate, the rain tangibly demonstrated the critical need for a school, and for protection, from the wind, heat, cold, and rain. Kids are learning in their new classrooms, and all are deeply grateful.
