overview
Caluco is a rural area outside of Kuito, where there has been no school, no clinic, and a population living in poverty. The 6-classroom school is beautiful, with office space and bathrooms. This is the first school in the area – the community and children are thrilled, and showed their appreciation at the dedication on January 30th, 2019. The celebration was attended by the Provincial Vice-Governor, Kuito Administration and Ministry of Education officials, Kevin Murphy, ExxonMobil Foundation President, the ExxonMobil team from Luanda, Dr. Mary Pigozzi, the Executive Director of Educate A Child, RISE International and RISE Angola, and the community.
Driving on a muddy road with water-filled ruts from the heavy overnight rain, the guests arrived to a huge awaiting crowd, lining the path. Village leaders in their khaki outfits and hats, women singing and dancing, children, parents, the community, teachers, and officials, greeting and shaking hands, all ready to celebrate the dedication of their amazing school. The ribbon was cut, speeches were delivered (always including one from a student), with special performances, cake, and gifts… baskets of pineapple, lettuce, potatoes, chickens, and a goat, given in gratitude. And now… children are in school with access to education!
