overview
Mutundo, Kwawa, Fatima and Cacilhas Norte are locations where parents and the community, desperate for education for their kids, contributed funds to build classrooms since the government was not in a position to do so. The Municipal Director of the Ministry of Education met the team at Mutundo, and again at Kwawa – a man who truly works for the good of the people, and to give kids access to education. The Principal of Kwawa is dynamic and the gratitude is powerful. The school area is large, with over 5000 kids, but classrooms for only 1000, meaning hundreds are under trees or have no option. There were lots of kids, class amidst construction, and enormous interest and excitement.
Six classrooms had been started – RISE completed those and added 6 more. Students were enrolled and the classrooms were used during construction, and until schools were closed in March 2020 in response to the pandemic. Construction was completed and the school was again used when schools re-opened in February 2021.
A dedication ceremony and celebration was held on June 1st, attended by Government and Ministry of Education officials, RISE Angola, teachers, students, and community members (a more limited gathering with COVID). The ribbon was cut, speeches were given, and all are grateful for this beautiful new school and access to education!
